Brecon Beacons - Pen Y Fan and Corn Du

It wasn't my first time attempting to climb this mountain - the first time ended in sore knees and crushing disappointment after I bit off more than I could chew. This time I told myself it'd be different and I'm so pleased to say I was right!

Distance: 4.98 miles

Time to complete: around 3 hours

Parking: Park at the Pont ar Daf car park (Brecon LD3 8NL) get there early as it fills up quickly!

I started out at about 9am on an overcast but humid day in July. I headed out of the car park and started the long, gradual climb up towards Corn Du. Last time I made the mistake of trying to climb Pen Y Fan via Jacobs Ladder (unless you're training for the SAS I wouldn't recommend) I enjoyed the steep but steady climb to the top, pausing to take in the incredible views of Fan Fawr as I got higher and higher.

Once I reached the top of the first climb I was really able to stop and take in the incredible view of the Brecon Horseshoe stretching out around me. As it was still pretty early and a weekday, there wasn't too many people around, so I was really able to appreciate the quiet wildness of the place.

Once I'd stopped to admire the view (and get my breath back!) it was time to scramble up the side of Corn Du. Most people skirt around the base of this peak, but if you have the energy in you I'd totally recommend bagging this peak. The views are absolutely stunning from the top - I'd even go as far to say I preferred the views from Corn Du over Pen Y Fan!

I was incredibly lucky with the weather and could see for miles. There's nothing like being right up on top of a peak with the wind whipping through you to make you feel alive! From here, it's a short clamber down the side of Corn Du up to the big one... Pen Y Fan!

I had to get an obligatory photo of the sign and this marks the highest I've climbed to date!

From here, it's a loop back down to the car park for a well earnt cup of tea!

I can't wait to head back out to the Brecons again soon - next time I think I'm going to try the Brecon Horseshoe!
